The Haxans – “Party Monsters”
We’ve got a never ending supply of rad vinyl on this week’s RECORD OF THE WEEK blog!
A Goth-pop duo, decked out in creep kitsch high fashion, and named after a silent film from the twenties about a 15th century German guide to hunting witches, THE HAXANS sound exactly like everything those images conjure. It’s the psycho-saturated music of a fiendish creep’s fever dream. Naturally, THE HAXANS debut album, “Party Monsters” will arrive on Friday the 13th, via CENTURY MEDIA in a rainbow of vinyl colors for you to choose from!

STARTER JACKETS is the latest band from pop punk virtuoso Luke McNeill of The Copyrights and Hospital Job. Luke is joined in STARTER JACKETS by fellow Hospital Job drummer Fred Malcom, and newcomers Lanny Durbin on guitar are vocals and Tyler Curry on bass. Fans of The Copyrights and Hospital Job will find plenty of the hook-laden melodic jams they’ve come to expect from McNeill’s bands, but STARTER JACKETS take it to new territory with a more indie or even new wave leaning style. Bright guitars, clean bass, and punchy drums laid on top of synthesizer-driven melodies make for an incredibly catchy, full, and rich sounding collection of songs. “Preferred Stock” was co-released between IT’S ALIVE RECORDS, BRASSNECK RECORDS (UK) and WATERSLIDE RECORDS (Japan).
“Single.Mother.Fucker.” is an emotional release, if anything, for Bay Area comedian, SAMANTHA GILWEIT. After her baby daddy skipped out on her and their failing pig farm business, SAMANTHA rolled up her sleeves, picked up a guitar, and asked herself, “What makes less money than farming?”, and began a career in musical comedy. The result is this 7″ featuring two of SAMANTHA’S favorite songs off her EP. SAMANTHA performs regularly at Cobbs, the Punch Line, SF SketchFest, and produces the Sunday showcase at Cheaper Than Therapy at the historic Shelton Theater in downtown San Francisco.

CITY MOUSE was formed when Miski Dee Rodriguez walked away from her hustle and bustle corporate world in Los Angeles, CA and sold her soul to rock n’ roll. Touring relentlessly for the past 10 years, the band has played their hearts out across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The band has released several singles over the years but on October 13th, 2017 the band will release their first full-length record “Get Right”. The new album delivers on an emotional level that pushes and pulls at your heart with every note and word. Whether empowering or heartbreaking, each song is crafted and played with an honesty and passion that commands attention and draws you in deeply. “Get Right” will be supported by several U.S. and international tours, starting on the release date and pushing through most of 2018, including Fest 16 in Gainesville, FL.
THE FADEAWAYS hail from Tokyo, Japan and have been around for about 10 years, they have 2 LPs and several singles and compilations to their name. “Kicks & Chicks” is coming out on HIDDEN VOLUME RECORDS and the deluxe version comes with 3D poster and 3D glasses!
SCIATIC NERVE features members of Nothington, Swingin’ Utters, and Western Addiction. The band started last year when these four friends ended up with some time to kill in a practice studio. A few songs were written, and the band just kind of naturally form like that. The record is fast, melodic and has a few unexpected turns on it. One of the strengths of this release is the diversity of songs – from fast to heavy to punk to poppy. It’s got something for everyone on it, but in general, it’s energetic and abrasive. BEARINGS was formed in 2014 by a group of college friends in a music industry program. They wanted to put what they’d learned to use while finding a creative outlet for the many stories they had to tell. Now, with their first two releases, “Higher Ground” and “Home Is…” under their belt, the group has come out swinging with their best record to date, “Nothing Here Is Permanent”! They just finished up a tour, so make your way to PURE NOISE RECORDS to grab a copy while you wait for more shows to be announced!
