Rosetta – “A Determinism of Morality”
Get lost in some insane colors on this week’s RECORD OF THE WEEK Blog!!!
TRANSLATION LOSS RECORDS just reissued Philadelphia experimental outfit ROSETTA’S landmark 2010 album, “A Determinism of Morality”!! Although the term epic is often thrown about without care, it is a decidedly apt descriptor for ROSETTA’S music, an unapologetically eclectic and intelligent hybrid that draws from the worlds of drone, ambient, progressive metal, and post-rock. The leading force in spacey, ambient art-metal have influenced an overwhelming number of subpar imitators who make it clear that droning, slow-paced, high-reverb metal is harder to pull off than it sounds…

SURPLUS 1980 is a San Francisco Bay Area-based post-punk band founded in 2009 by former Sleepytime Gorilla Museum multi-instrumentalist Moe! Staiano. As alluded to in its name, SURPLUS 1980’s music takes cues from the angular bands of the 1980s such as Dog Faced Hermans and Diagram Brothers and fuses it with the heavy, fierce attack pioneered by The Ex and The Fall to create their own blend of modern no-wave angst. Combined with Staiano’s playful lyrics, SURPLUS 1980’s music is a thick slab of out-jazz, with more than a dash of punk ferocity. “Pigeon Obstacle Course” features unique instrumentation and orchestration. Many tracks are recorded with a two drummers, marimba, cabasa, prepared piano, glockenspiel, melodica, bundt pan metal percussion, and ebow guitars. THE RESIDENTS officially started in San Francisco in 1972 and managed to remain anonymous for 50 years. After their first world tour back in 1982, the group swore to never tour again. Now presumably in their 70’s (nobody knows for sure) the band has spent recent years touring harder than ever before. “In Between Dreams Live” is THE RESIDENT’S first live album to be released on vinyl since 1990’s Cube E album. This tour focused on dream like material from the group’s vast catalog and also features three brand new songs from an upcoming “blues” tinged studio album. Stay tuned!
THE PARANOYDS’ humble beginnings can be traced back to a friendship forged between Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) and Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) over Myspace in their early teens. Bonded by a shared interest in local underground music, the pair eventually moved their online friendship into the real world. Laila’s childhood friend Lexi was brought into the fold and the first vestiges of THE PARANOYDS began to take shape. THE PARANOYDS channel revelry and revulsion into their debut album “Carnage Bargain”—a raucous blend of garage rock, new wave swagger, horror film soundtrack campiness, and genre-mashing weirdness. Check them out on a US tour underway right now!
Released by CHUNKSAAH RECORDS in 1996, “Maniacal Laughter” is THE BOUNCING SOULS’ second full-length album. Currently celebrating their 30 year anniversary with a retrospective book, a new ep, and upcoming dates in Europe and the US; this repress features Doublemint / Grimace Purple “Galaxy” style vinyl.
