Samiam – “Clumsy”
Some big releases this week on the RECORD OF THE WEEK Blog!!!
SAMIAM started in 2006 as a screamo band, but when the singer’s dayglow combover started to recede, they switched styles to more of an urban contemporary zydeco / reggaeton vibe. Or they are a punk started in 1988 in Berkeley, CA, no one can remember for sure. In any case, their friends over at NO IDEA RECORDS were nice enough to repress their 1994 major label album, ‘Clumsy’, on some amazing colors, but only for UK and Germany. SAMIAM also head out on tour in October, but again, only in Europe, sorry North America!

As the bandleader on David Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’, saxophonist DONNY MCCASLIN collaborated with the Starman to carry forward his penchant for reinvention. With his upcoming studio album — a daring fusion of vibrant electronica, and bombastic art-rock due this fall — MCCASLIN applied that mindset to his own work, pushing his music in a bold new direction. Propulsive and improvisational alternative music combines with a heady blend of vocals, saxophone and flute, pianos and Wurlitzer, electric bass and pummeling drums that captures MCCASLIN’S core roots while also bringing in more recent influences such as Radiohead and Bon Iver. “Blow” comes out on MOTEMA MUSIC, preorder your now!

KING BUFFALO is a psychedelic trio in the classic format of bass, drums, and guitar, whose expansive and thunderous music is anything but easily definable. Formed by three long-standing members of the blooming Rochester, NY rock scene, KING BUFFALO gathered in September of 2013 to start working on a new musical collaboration in a heavy rock vein. Their efforts spawned a demo release and several splits and one-offs which, coupled with their impressive live show, quickly gained them an international audience. After countless tours and shows, they are back with long awaited second full length, “Longing to Be the Mountain” – It is 24 minutes of material, and more than 13 of that resides within the opening title-track.
