Pig Destroyer – 100th Decibel Flexi
Check out how we’re still creating new ways to make flexis on this week’s RECORD OF THE WEEK Blog!!!
It pays to be a deluxe subscriber with DECIBEL! Back in 2007, as PIG DESTROYER’S first DECIBEL cover story was coming out, guitarist Scott Hull told us how cool he thought it would be to include a PxDx flexi disc in the issue. Great idea, only one problem: no one on earth was producing flexi discs in 2007. It would be another three years until Pirates Press fired up the first modern flexi press and the DECIBEL FLEXI SERIES came to life. Lineup turmoil, conflicting schedules and various other hurdles prevented us from consummating a PxDx recording. Over a decade later, miraculously, the 100th DECIBEL FLEXI is a reality in the form of PIG DESTROYER’S “The Cavalry.” For the first time ever, one of our NEW PICTURE FLEXIS WITH FOIL STAMPING!!! All of the Pirates are incredibly proud to have reached this milestone of 100 flexis in Decibel Magazine. A BIG thank you to everyone who’s made this possible. Here’s to 100 more, and beyond!!

THE POTIONS were founded in Michigan back in the early 2000’s as a sort of f-ed up performance art band. In the early days it was a completely shattered band. I mean even the gear was shattered—the snare drum was suspended in a metal trash can, zip-tied to the handles. The band’s motto is crash and burn as they have had repeated self destruction. Both songs are bangers out of the gate! If you don’t like raucous and harsh Rock N’ Roll then this isn’t for you. But if you do this will get you out of your seat and thrashing around!

Based in Berkeley, California, THE GHOST NEXT DOOR emerged from a desire to marry the dark melancholy of 80s and 90s alternative with the aggression and drive of Bay Area metal. “A Feast For the Sixth Sense” is their third album, which is a politically charged exploration of groove, riffs, and the powers they hold! Kansas City rock foursome RADAR STATE may be newly-minted, but the members of the band are familiar names to independent music fans. With members of the Get Up Kids, the Anniversary, and the Architects, the band’s pedigree is unquestionable. RADAR STATE’S sound is guitar-driven and hook-laden, reminiscent of vintage Lookout Records pop-punk. After a few EPs, the band is back with their debut full length album “Strays” out now via WIRETAP RECORDS.

“Pentaptych” is a collection of 9 new tracks from RYAN LOTT, taken from the ballet piece commissioned by the Philbrook Museum of Art and presented by Tulsa Ballet. The original evening-length work was choreographed by Ma Cong and included a live, original painting created by Eric Sall on-stage. Created as a series of resonant spaces for Ma’s choreography, and for the generation and regeneration of Eric’s paintings -each musical movement explores a consistent instrumental palette, led by the violin (and its viola and cello counterparts), in various stages of abstraction. Available now from THIS IS MERU!

BVDUB is Brock Van Wey who has also released numerous ambient projects under his given name, deep house as Earth House Hold, and drum & bass as East Of Oceans. Moving from turbulent times of his native California Van Wey chose the chilling winter of Warsaw Poland as a divergence. Alone against the icy cold, confined to the indoors in search of protection against the world outside, Van Wey channeled, as he always does, his surroundings as they coalesced with his self-imposed aberration. The outcome of this move and period of near-total isolation is ‘Explosions in Slow Motion’. Featuring four long-form songs accompanied by four “ember” vignettes, ‘Explosions in Slow Motion’ is quite possibly Van Wey’s most mournfully isolated work in his massive discography to date.

DJEVEL is a Norwegian black metal band, built on a traditional sound of the 90s sound of the genre, with a melodic, yet raw form of Black Metal. The band release the debut “Dødssanger” back in 2011, and have since become a critically acclaimed band with five albums under their belt. After the five regular records, time has come for a very limited EP, consisting of all acoustic music, based around songs from their previous albums, except one brand new track.
