School Drugs – “Modern Medicine”
Check out this gnarly RECORD OF THE WEEK Blog!!!
Nestled along the Jersey Shore, in the cradle of a state where companies like Bayer and Global Pharma Tek set up shop, SCHOOL DRUGS are set to release their debut full length release to a drug riddled nation. The album features 10 tracks of highly medicated yet seldom sedated hardcore punk. A true Adderal blitz through the genealogy of the genre that brings to mind the likes of Black Flag, Poison Idea, and Bad Brains. Based on a steady diet of 80s classics, SCHOOL DRUGS are still pissed, only now they know how to express it: fast, loud, angry with a cheeky grin, proper fucking punk. Every component – name, tempo, stage antics, artwork – is a pushback, a reminder of what punk is, why punk is, and how punk is. It is necessary to wipe the slate clean periodically, remembering the formula but starting again. Recorded at VOLUME IV in New Brunswick, NJ by CHRIS PIERCE (THE ERGS!, NIGHT BIRDS) “Modern Medicine” does just that! BRING THE MASH at their record release show TONIGHT at the Asbury Park Brewery in Asbury Park, NJ, or head over to INDECISION RECORDS to grab your copy of “Modern Medicine” today!

Indie-surf with a dash of emo, BREAKUP SHOES formed as a group of high schoolers wanting to start writing songs in late 2015. In 2016, we started playing house shows around Arizona State’s campus and dropped their first EP. Since then they’ve garnered a solid internet following, acted as local support for some our favorite bands coming through Phoenix and are looking forward to getting on the road more frequently following the release of this record. This record is very introspective, covering the often trite gamut of emotions from existential dread, to newfound infatuation to love lost in a creative way. The album is more or a less a catalog of the emotional peaks and valleys I’ve experienced over the last year sung over catchy riffs and laid-back instrumentation. Check out their record release show this Sunday in Phoenix, or their mini tour in October – you’ll have to wait until next year for their full uS tour to begin!

Ann Arbor’s FALLOW LAND was born in a time of trepidation — a period of unease and anxiety following multiple losses. The result: FALLOW LAND’S debut EP “Pinscher”, a guitar-driven narrative centered around disillusion. Two years have now passed since the release of “Pinscher” and with time has come critical praise, healing, and evolution. For FALLOW LAND, the album marks a sonic progression. In the spirit of bands like Foxing, American Football, and Minus the Bear, the record is driven by rhythmically-nuanced textures. The sum of the intricate instrumentation and layers create a lush and mathy soundscape. While records within this genre can border on self-indulgent, this remains accessible, memorable, and melodically compelling throughout the entire album. Find out more at SPARTAN RECORDS!

Following betrayals and bridges burned, numerous relationships among friends and musicians in Burlington, Vermont were pretty much torched. The last friendships that remained were among three guys – a drummer, a bassist, and a singer (also a onetime American Idol contestant, amazingly) – and all they could do, personally and musically, was put their heads down and hearts on the line to see what they could make. The result is the pulverizingly cathartic, demon-exorcising northern aggression of GHASTLY SOUND, a hardcore-infused stoner metal trio that, almost inexplicably, encompasses and accomplishes more without a traditional guitar player than many traditionally-arranged bands ever manage. “Have a Nice Day” is the band’s first full album following two EP releases and a digital single. Head over to MAGNETIC EYE RECORDS to grab one if you still can or catch GHASTLY SOUND the the “Magnetic Eye Records Day of Doom Label Showcase” at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on Nov. 2nd!
